Join us in March 2009 in Ruffe - A Writer's Paradise

Join us for what promises to be an extraordinary five days of reflection, writing, and discovery. A deep immersion into words, the senses, and the self. If you've been searching for the right time and place to open to the possibilities, to the surprises, to the silences inside you (as well as the joyous noise), and maybe even be a little daring, this is it!

Five days, six nights, double occupancy (you may stay longer if you wish and work out details with our hosts).

Delicious meals, including wine with dinner (not included: two lunches on day trips).

Sous chef duty, including trip to the market, if you'd like to cook!

Writing classes morning and afternoon, and group readings in the evening (reading is voluntary). We will not be workshopping existing material, but generating new pieces/fragments (for future work) in whatever form you wish.

Excursions to local farmer’s market and vineyards, the pilgrimage road to Santiago, and nearby 12th/13th century towns and villages such as St. Emilion: beautifully preserved medieval town in a spectacular setting; Bergerac: well-restored old town center, good street market; nearby is Monbazillac, with great views from its chateau.

This is a fantastic opportunity to expand, explore, and experiment as a writer.

"Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now.” (Goethe)

What to Bring

Thesaurus (this is a must - we will be using it for some exercises)

Notebook/journal(s) and pens (buy a pack of pens just in case...)

Water bottle

Snacks (some will be provided, but if you're a major chocoholic or something, better bring it with you!)

Warm clothes (including rain gear)

Dress up clothes - our first and last nights will be special!

Flashlight with batteries

Prepaid Phone card - make sure it's international and will work in France (can buy them there)

Walking shoes

Ear plugs  - with roommates, this is sometimes a good idea... :)

Bathrobe - shared bathrooms

Tote bag or small kit for toiletries

Alarm clock

Walkman/iPod (optional, of course - we'd rather you tuned in to yourself and the natural sounds of Ruffe)

Adaptor for hair dryers, etc.

Lap top - you can bring this if you like, for email (there is WiFi), but we're encouraging everyone to write free hand with pen and paper for a more visceral writing experience. Typing on a computer is just so...civilized.

How to Register

PLEASE NOTE: We will be accepting deposits in October, 2008.

We cannot accept credit cards. Include your email address on the memo line of the check. Please also include a SASE (self-addressed stamped envelope).

If you need to cancel, and your cancellation is by January 1st, the deposit, minus a $100 processing fee, will be returned.

You will receive email notification as to whether or not you have a spot as soon as we receive the check. If yours arrives after spots are filled, we will return your check in the SASE you (hopefully!) provided and put you on a waiting list should anyone cancel. You will also receive a registration form to fill out and return, and a CD of French music to get you in the mood!

Once we know who is attending, we will provide a list of participants with email addresses so you may 'meet' each other prior to the retreat, and (if you like) coordinate your travel.

We are SO looking forward to seeing you! We are going to have an incredible week together.

Play Chef!

About Your Host

  • Simon Walton
Simon (who is an attorney in Baltimore, formerly a solicitor in London) has owned Ruffe for over 20 years. In common with many British people, he loves the cuisine, culture and beauty of South West France and is very knowledgeable about all three. He will host the retreat and will cook the meals. The ingredients will be local, seasonal, and fresh (so far as this is possible in March). The dishes will be authentically French and mostly regional. Simon will share his love of wine and there will be many local examples to sample and enjoy. The food and wines will all be introduced. Ever since High School, Simon has visited France regularly and has a special interest in its history, art, and architecture. He will lead the side tours which are all intended to reveal unique aspects of the region: a local street market, a chateau (i.e. winery) and a medieval town with links to a pilgrim route to Compostella.
